Melbourne Recital Center and Melbourne Music Week present Los Angeles’ prodigal song-writing son Ariel Pink. In true Ariel Pink style, his latest record, 'Dedicated To Bobby Jameson', features his signature experimental, impressionistic, lo-fi chill-wave vibes mixed with themes of mismanaged dreams, West Coast mythologies, haunted boulevards and the acceptance of self, all projected through a celluloid filter of controversies. As the title suggests, Pink’s latest release is a touching dedicated to L.A. musician Bobby Jameson, a character of the West Coast long presumed dead who re-emerged after 35 years of reclusion. These songs illustrate the tests, milestones and adversaries Bobby faced pulled together as a singular vision of artistic pop through a frenzied portrayal of humanity’s baseness and beauty experience the ups and downs of despair, self-loathing and suspicion contrasted with love, nostalgia and desire. From rah-rah psych rock tracks to grungy ‘Video Killed the Radio Style’ breakdowns, Ariel Pink’s way of remaining contained whilst sprawling across an endless spectrum of shimmering pop is singular to his vision of hypnagogic pop storytelling. ARIEL PINK Tuesday 21 November 2017 7.30pm Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre

Health is the biggest, most important and fastest growing industry in the world. All human characteristics, including susceptibility to diseases, are profoundly influenced by our genetic inheritance, although until recently it has been nigh on impossible to take genetic information into account in healthcare. This has all changed – over the past two decades the fastest technological advance in history has reduced the cost of human genome sequencing dramatically to a few thousand dollars, with further reductions to come – ushering in a new era of personalised medicine and ‘precision’ healthcare. Soon individual genome sequences will be a standard part of health records, which will revolutionise biomedical discovery, personal healthcare, and health system management. Millions of genome sequences integrated with millions of clinical records and other information from personal devices and the internet of things will create a multi-dimensional data ecology that will require advanced systems not only to secure the privacy and provenance of the data, but also to enable its analysis by machine learning and artificial intelligence. The last of the great cottage industries will become the most important of the data-intensive industries of the 21st century. SPEAKER: Professor John Mattick, Executive Director of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research More information: sydney.edu.au Co-presented by Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney

We're creating the Toolern Metropolitan Activity Centre and Employment and Mixed Use Urban Design Framework. An urban design framework is a detailed planning and design document that will guide the future development of the town centre. Located in Cobblebank, this town centre will serve the region as the main hub for shopping, services, food and entertainment and will be similar to Sunshine and Broadmeadows town centres. Right next door will be a future employment area featuring office spaces, warehousing, big box retail and light industry. Come and chat to us about the future Town Centre and the Employment area. Melbourne Metro Rail Authority will also be in attendance to chat about the new Toolern station. Find out more: melton.vic.gov.au
There are more than 400,000 Australians living with dementia, with this number expected to increase to more than 1 million by 2050 in the absence of any significant medical intervention. What is Australia doing to address this challenge? How is Australian research contributing to a cure? And by 2050, what type of society do we want to be to support these million Australians? The Hon Bill Shorten MP joins Professor Ian Hickie from the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre to talk about what can be done to make Australia the best place in the world for people with dementia to live. A Q&A will follow.
