Room on the Broom

Adapted from the award winning picture book by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler, published by Macmillan Children’s books. How the cat purred and how the witch grinned, As they sat on their broomstick and flew through the wind… The witch and her cat are flying happily on their broomstick – until a stormy wind blows away the witch’s hat, bow and wand. A helpful dog, bird and frog find the witch’s lost things, and they all hop on the broom for a ride. But this broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK – the broom snaps in two! When a hungry dragon appears, who will save the poor witch? And will there ever be room on the broom for everyone? Room on the Broom promises songs, laughs and scary fun for children aged 3 and up - and their grown-ups..

Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead is a Mexican celebration that started with the Aztecs and continues today in many countries. According to tradition, on the evening of November 2 the souls of the dead come back to celebrate their lives with their friends and family. Altars decorated with food and traditional objects are set up in households and public buildings to guide the souls in their journey. The association Friends of Mexico, in partnership with the John Curtin Gallery and Place Activation, are hosting a free Day of the Dead event in the Gallery precinct. A monumental altar for the dead and a photographic exhibition will be on display from Monday 23rd October. Bring your offerings and photos of the people you want to celebrate and be part of the tradition. On Saturday 4 November, 11am – 5pm, there will be a Mexican celebration with food, music and games for all ages! Try some traditional Mexican bread and hot chocolate, listen to a Mariachi band, watch some Mexican Folkloric dances and browse the exhibition. First 100 people to attend the event get their own skull to decorate and take home with them. Proudly sponsored by the Friends of Mexico, Multicultural Language Centre, John Curtin Gallery and Place Activation at Curtin. We do ask for a gold coin donation to support the people who lost their homes in the recent earthquake in Mexico. Visitors will also be welcome to visit the exhibitions on show in the Art Gallery.

Donna Farhi: Pathways to a Centered Body

Everything that we do in our everyday lives is dependent on our posture. Our ability to lie down, sit, stand, and walk in comfort and with efficiency is directly related to the template of centered body posture. And the execution of every Yoga posture or athletic activity is an expression of the clarity and refinement of this most basic relationship of our body structure to the ground, gravity, and space. In this two-day workshop, you will learn how to both identify and correct deep structural imbalances in your body that may be preventing you from being truly centered. Using easy-to-understand anatomical terms combined with innovative PowerPoint presentations, Donna will unravel the complexities of the deepest core muscles of the body, the psoas, to reveal its function as an extraordinary unifying structure for the entire body. When these deep core muscles become unbalanced, the position of the pelvis and spine is thrown off-center. Poor posture, back pain, and discomfort in movement can result. In a step-by-step protocol, you’ll learn how to soften and hydrate, release, lengthen, balance, and strengthen your core muscles to move again with ease. And you’ll learn how to safely improve your flexibility in Yoga practices without compromising pelvic and spinal stability. As deeply held tension is resolved, this work will help you to feel more grounded, mentally focused, emotionally calm, and better able to stay connected to yourself and to others. Join the IYTA Conference Donna Farhi is one of the key-note speakers at the I.Y.T.A conference immediately before this workshop. Details and registration to join this amazing conference are HERE Price and Details This 12 hour workshop will be an invaluable investment for Yoga students and for teachers of all movement disciplines who wish to offer effective and pain-free strategies for improving movement function and healing back pain. It will qualify you for 12 CPD points for members of teaching associations like...

Luke Byrnes and Clancy Staunton Recitals with

Advanced Diplomas of Music are many things: hours upon hours of practice, feelings of inadequacy for not entering a BMus sooner, a series of creative quarter-life existential crises, a rapid escalation of student debt that your qualifications are unlikely to pay off, but one thing is mostly certain, it will usually always culminate in a recital. And so, it is Luke and Clancy’s pleasure to present to you the culmination of our musical studies over the past year, performed at one of Melbourne’s most loved music venues, Open Studio. In addition to the recital program, punters will be the first of the public lucky enough to hear our special Fairfield guest, Marte Ydema, perform her debut show with her band Brassica! 8pm – Brassica 9pm – Luke Byrnes 10pm – Clancy Staunton Concession/Students: $5 or donation Waged: $8 Brassica A little bitter but sweet when well cooked, BRASSICA will play you songs inspired by hot Melbourne summers and cold uninsulated Suburban houses, mixed with some European melancholia. A little folky, bluesy, jazzy, get ready to dance a waltz if you dare. Or pretend you are watching the night sky from a Parisian terrace. Luke Byrnes Luke Byrnes is a tall guitarist from Northern Rivers NSW. Initially heading to Melbourne in 2012 to pursue a career as a geneticist, Luke took a tragic and all-to-common turn towards life as a musician. Having performed with a diverse assortment of local Melbourne outfits ranging from bluegrass, punk, folk, and hip hop, Luke has recently finished a year of musical training at Melbourne Polytechnic to help integrate his varied musical tastes. Drawing inspiration from guitarists as disparate as Tony Rice and Ben Monder, Luke brings a colourful range of influences to his playing and improvisation, which he tries to deliver free of cliché and fusion cheese. Luke will be performing a collection of original compositions, jazz and bluegrass arrangements, and will be accompanied by a rotating line-up of some of Melbourne’s finest...

75 Years: A Portrait of Meredith Monk

In Monk’s world, “voices are like instruments and instruments are like voices”. ‘Gotham Lullaby’ and ‘Urban March’ showcase the charming melodies, wordless vocalising and astonishing range that have defined Monk’s works for singers, while ‘Backlight’ is an exploration of breath and colour in instrumental writing. Tendrils of melody and modal harmonies weave together in ‘Realm Variations’, representing the newest chapter in this fearless artist’s ever-evolving career. Monk’s music is intoxicatingly playful, achingly personal and instantly recognisable, exploring the human voice at its most ethereal, acrobatic and startling. Rubiks Collective celebrate Monk’s seventy-fifth birthday with a retrospective of her musical output, pairing some of her most recent offerings with beloved works from her early career. Rubiks will be joined by an all-star line up of guest musicians, including Invenio Singers. The evening will also include the announcement of the winner of the Pythia Prize- a new commission project that will see an Australian female composer collaborate with Rubiks to create a new work, to be premiered in 2018. --- Backlight (2015) *AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE Masks (2002) Gotham Lullaby (1981) Urban March (2002) Realm Variations (2012) *AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE --- Rubiks Collective Tamara Kohler, flutes Gemma Tomlinson, cello Jacob Abela, keyboards Kaylie Melvile, percussion Invenio Singers Gian Slater Miriam Crellin Louise Rankin Hannah Cameron Josh Kyle Edward Fairlie Guest Musicians Ben Opie, oboe Justin Beere, clarinets Chris Martin, bassoon Ian Wildsmith, french horn Amy Brookman, violin Phoebe Green, viola Melina Van Leewuen, harp Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre and Rubiks Collective.
